Mystique Stonehenge

Muchas teorías se han elaborado sobre la finalidad de estas grandes piedras colocadas en medio de la campiña inglesa, pero ninguna fue totalmente confirmada. No hay nada en el mundo que se pueda comparar a este monumento construido exclusivamente con grandes piedras rectangulares y construido en tres fases durante un período de 1400 años.

Es un monumento megalítico, tipo crómlech, que data del año 2400 a.C. Se cree que se utilizaba como templo religioso, monumento funerario u observatorio astronómico. Rodeado por una zanja circular, hay 50 hoyos circulares formando una circunferencia en torno al monumento, que parecen ser túmulos de enterramientos. Dentro de ellos, se sitúan los monolitos que constan de dos partes: un círculo exterior de diámetro y una construcción interior en forma de herradura.

Estos dólmenes se localizan en el condado de Witshire (Inglatera), cerca de Amesbury y a unos pocos kilómetros de Salisbury. Su propietario es Edward Seymour, I duque de Somerset, que se debe estar haciendo de oro gracias al precio de la entrada al interior del recinto.

Curiosidades:

  • El historiador del siglo XII, Geoffrey de Monmouth, indicó que las  piedras habían sido llevadas a la llanuras de Wiltshire desde Irlanda, por el mago Merlín, en esos días de Ambrosio, tío del rey Arturo. Posteriormente, según el historiador, los círculos de menhires sirvieron de lugar de enterramiento para Ambrosio y su hermano Pendragón, padre del Rey Arturo. 
  • También se atribuyó a los druidas, sacerdotes celtas, la fundación del singular monumento, que debían utilizarlo para rendir culto al Sol y señalar las estaciones.  Esta creencia está muy extendida en Gran Bretaña, habiéndose llevado a cabo festejos druidas en Stonehenge durante en el solsticio del verano.
  •  En 1987, Jim Reinders decidió construir el Carhenge. Se colocaron 38 automóviles pintados de color gris en un círculo, intentando reproducir la disposición del conjunto megalítico de Stonehenge. La obra está situada en Alliance, Nebraska.
  • Un australiano construyó una réplica del Stonehenge, el «Henge» para los turistas de las famosas bodegas en Margaret River, para el solsticio de verano del 2008.

Como dije antes, el monumento se encuentra en media de la campiña, incluso al lado se podía ver un rebaño de ovejas. Si vais en invierno, un consejo: ¡¡abrigaos!!. Pero qué frío pasé, no se lo pueden imaginar, con sensación térmica de -5ºC y un fuerte viento que dificultaba hacer fotos y vídeos. Sin embargo, mereció la pena ver algo que siempre había visto en los libros de historia. La visita dura 1 hora aprox., fuimos en un tour organizado por «Lil adventures» en el que también entraba la visita a la ciudad de Bath, que ya os hablaré de ella en otro post.
