Por Covadonga y Cangas de Onís, Asturias

La última parte de mi escapada a Asturias fue Covadonga, y por consiguiente, también Cangas de Onís. Forma parte del Parque Nacional de los Picos de Europa y es el conjunto monumental más visitado de Asturias debido al santuario de la Virgen de Covadonga. Además, es muy conocido porque era una de las etapas de la Vuelta ciclista española.

The last part of my Asturias trip was Covadonga, and consequently, also Cangas de Onís. It forms part of the National Park of Picos de Europa and is the monumental set most visited of Asturias due to the sanctuary of the Virgin of Covadonga. In addition, it is very famous because it was one of the stages of the  Spanish cycle tour.
 
Al llegar al aparcamiento no estaba nublado así que decidimos comprar el tícket para subir a los lagos ( Enol y Ercina) en autobús, fuimos directamente arriba y no nos detuvimos, en la parada intermedia, la de la basílica. Cuando estuvimos arriba, tan pronto empezamos a caminar por los caminos de tierra y piedras que llevan a los lagos el cielo comenzó a nublarse y no pudimos ver mucho, sólo cuando las nubes momentánamente desparecían podíamos avistar los lagos o el «Polje de Comeya». Es muy típico encontrarse con vacas durante el camino, en nuestro caso, nos tocó bordear el camino porque nos encontramos una en medio de él que no se quería mover.

As soon we arrived the parking, it turned cloudy so we decided to buy the tícket to rise to the lakes (Enol and Ercina) by bus, we were straight to the top and did not stop, in the next stop, where there is a basilica. When we were there, as soon we started walking along the stones paths that take to the lakes, the sky it began to cloud over and we could not see very much, only when the clouds momentary dissapeared, we  could see the lakes or the «Polje de Comeya». It is very typical to fubd cows during the way, in our case, we had to border the way because we found one in the middle of it whose did not want to move.

Además, empezó a lloviznar y nos tuvimos que volver a coger el autobús por miedo a que nos pillara la lluvia. Ir con calzado y ropa cómoda porque hay varias travesías para andar durante kilómetros, si no os gusta hacer trekking y queréis sólo ver los lagos y los paisajes, podéis coger un taxi todoterreno que suben hasta arriba.

In addition, it started drizzling and we had to return to take the bus for fear that it was plundering the rain from us. You shoud use comfrotable footwear and clothes because there are several rough sections. If you do not like trekking and want to see only the lakes and the landscapes, you can take a 4×4 taxu that will take you to the top quickly.
Después de subir hasta los lagos, el autobús nos paró en la zona de la basílica y el santuario de Covadonga. Estuvimos viendo la cueva con la imagen de la Virgen de Covadonga donde están enterrados Don Pelayo y Enrique I, el Católico y toda la zona con su hotel y monasterio incluido. Para los que nos sabeis la leyenda, se cuenta que:

En el siglo VIII d..C., la Península Ibérica estaba casi completamente conquistada por los musulmanes y el norte, liderado por Pelayo, oponía resistencia. Alkama, un lugarteniente del imperio musulmán fue enviado para conquistar y detener a los rebeldes, con una tropa de 187.000 hombres según las crónicas árabes. La resistencia sólo estaba formada de un grupo de, como máximo 300 hombres y mujeres. Los musulmanes fueron confiados a las montañas de los Picos de Europa para detener el atrincheramiento. Unos cuentan que a Pelayo se le apareció del cielo una cruz roja, el pendón perdido de la batalla de Guadalete, otros también en ese instante se le aparece la Virgen, y que entre la bruma se le aparece un ermitaño con la cruz de la victoria. Pelayo envalentonado por estas señales se decide a oponer frente, con la idea de que más que una guerra por unas tierras, era por unos valores, de religión. Comienza la batalla entre la «cruz» y la «media luna» El número de los cristianos era ínfimo y pretendían luchar contra los que habían ganado fácilmente todas las batallas para conquistar la Península, excepto la de Guadalete. Pero, a los cristianos les amparaba la Santísima Virgen porque al iniciar la batalla, hace que a los musulmanes les llegue una lluvia con flechas y piedras y acabe en masacre. Por lo que deciden los pocos que quedaron, desistir de atacar la Santa Cueva . Al huir. por las riveras del río Deva, tuvo lugar un gran terremoto que originó grietas en los desfiladeros para que fueran engullidos por la propia tierra. Alkama acabó muerto y don Pelayo, empezó la Reconquista de la Península Ibérica.

After rising up to the lakes, the bus stopped us at the basilica and Covadonga’s sanctuary. We saw the cave with the image of the Virgin of Covadonga where there are buried Don Pelayo and Enrique I, the Catholic and the whole zone by his hotel and included monastery. If you don´t know the legend, it tells that:

In the 8th century d.. C., the Iberian Peninsula was almost completely conquered by the Muslims and the north led by Pelayo, was objecting resistance. Alkama, a deputy of the Moslem empire was sent to conquer and to stop the rebels, with a troop of 187.000 men according to the Arabic chronicles. The resistance only was formed of a group of, at the maximum 300 men and women. The Muslims were entrusted to the mountains of Europa’s Beaks to stop the entrenchment.Some count to Pelayo one appeared of the sky a red cross, the lost standard of Guadalete’s battle, others also in this instant one appears the Virgin, and that between the haze one appears a hermit with the cross of the victory. Pelayo encouraged by these signs decides to object forehead, with the idea of that more than a war for a few lands, was for a few values, of religion.It begins the battle between the «cross» and the «half moon» The number of the Christians was negligible and they were trying to fight against those who had gained easily all the battles to conquer the Peninsula, except that of Guadalete. But, the Holiest Virgin was protecting the Christians because on having initiated the battle, it does that a rain comes to the Muslims with arrows and stones and finishes in massacre. For what they decide the few ones that stayed, to desist from attacking the Holy Cave.On having fled. For the riveras of the river Deva, there took place a great earthquake that originated cracks in the gorges in order that they were devoured by the own land. Alkama dead man and don Pelayo finished, began the Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula.

Al llegar al aparcamiento decidimos acercarnos a ver Cangas de Onís, que se encuentra a unos 10 km. El pueblo tiene una gran oferta turística al ofrecer la visita a los Picos de Europa, los lagos de Covadonga, rutas para descender el Sella en canoa, espeleología, rutas a caballo o a 4×4, etc. Anochecía, por lo que dimos una vuelta corta para ver su puente romano y finalizamos nuestro día, como no podía ser de otra forma, cenando bebiendo sidra.

As soon we arrived the parking, we decided to approach in order to meet Cangas de Onís, approximately 10 km. They offer in this town toom many things: Picos de Europa trips, seals in canoe, speleology, routes astride or by 4×4, etc. It was getting dark, so we had to return to see its roman bridge and finish our day…  and because there is not another way to finish the day here: having dinner drinking a good bottle of cider.

En Cangas de Onís no había estado nunca y me quedé con las ganas de estar algún día más y disfrutar de alguna de las actividades anteriores, porque además se veía que tenía un gran ambiente nocturno. Pero, ello tiene solución, he tomado nota y algún día iré a que me vuelvan a escanciar sidra.

In Cangas de Onís I have never been here before and I remained with the desires of comming back some day more and enjoying its activities. But, it has solution, I have taken note and some day I will come back to enjoy ordering   «escanciar» another bottle of cider.
